About me

My name is Mary Harris. I am a HCPC-registered Art Psychotherapist with an MA in Art Psychotherapy, a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychosocial Communication (Group Dynamics) and a BA (Hons) degree in Human Communication.

I specialise in 1:1 therapy with primary-aged children. I have over a decade of experience working with children and adolescents in schools (mainstream, Special Educational Needs provisions and Pupil Referral Units), children’s homes, and in other community settings in both in the UK and Spain.

As an associate member of the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT), I am part of special interest groups ATCAF (Art Therapists working with Children, Adolescents and Families), and NATE (Northern Art Therapy in Education).

I currently work in schools across Manchester and Salford. I support children with a wide range of emotional difficulties such as anxiety, low self-esteem, grief, loss or trauma (including domestic violence, abuse and neglect); refugees & asylum seekers; children with special educational needs; children whose families are going through separation, or struggling with mental health issues, drug abuse or chronic illnesses. I use an attachment- and trauma-responsive approach to understand children who may communicate their distress in unexpected ways.

Before completing my 3-year postgraduate Art Therapy training in 2013 at the University of Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain, my professional experience was in research and app development.
